At The Atte Bower Short Mat Bowls Club we 'roll up' twice a week - teams are picked at random, so you may be playing with seasoned players (we still have founder members very active in the Club) or newcomers to the game.
We welcome visitors who want to join us for a roll up, and particularly like welcoming newcomers to the game who want to find out if it is for them. If you would like to come along as a visitor, or to see whether our club is for you please come along one Monday about 7.15pm (play starts at 7.30) or Thursday about 9.15am (play starts at 9.30am) and you can borrow some bowls if you have none.

The Atte Bower Short Mat Bowls Club was founded and named on 3rd July 1994, so is now in its 29th year. Then, it was a new and exciting sport that the founder members were bringing to Havering atte Bower. Today our members come from all over Havering and beyond.
The club was started with an interest free loan of £1,500, made by a founder member, quickly followed by a grant from the council of £150. The loan was repaid within 2 years as the club was very successful from the outset.
The very first Treasurer was Sylvia Snelling, who later became Secretary to the club and is now Chair of the committee. Other members who joined that first year include Peter Snelling (our President), John and Terry who all still play in the League for us.
The Club soon started its regular practice or ‘roll up’ sessions and became members of the South East Essex League playing competitively against other clubs. We also enjoyed playing a number of friendly inter-club matches and trophy matches, and still hope to in the coming season.

From the very beginning, the social side of the club has been very important and often combined with fund raising. There have been trips to the races, weekends away as well as quiz nights, garden parties and meals at a restaurant.
