Atte Bower Short Mat Bowls Club has roughly the same number of men and women, who have a varied level of experience playing bowls. Some members have been playing for over 30 years and our least experienced player started just a few months ago. Two of our members have qualified as umpires and two play for the Essex County team.
Some members have only played the Short Mat variety of bowls, but others play (or have played) lawn bowls, indoor bowls and even carpet bowls.
The majority of our members are over 50 years of age. This is not by choice and we would welcome younger players. Indeed we have two youngsters join us every school holiday when they visit their grandparents, and despite not playing very often, they do really well.
All of our members say they enjoy the weekly roll up sessions where they can socialise, chat and enjoy the friendly banter. We also have a number of social events such as quiz nights and garden parties, and regularly go out for a meal together.
A once thriving club, our numbers have dropped since Covid and we are looking for new members to swell our ranks.
