OK, so it might not strictly be an annual event, but this year we intend to have fun. Members and ex-members, are invited to our 'Annual Garden Party' at 1pm on 10th September at the home of Sylvia and Peter S. If you want to come, please give Sylvia a call or drop her an email.
Our AGM is to be held on 6th September 2021 at Bower Hall. It will start at 7.30pm and we will have a roll up afterwards. This is where the committee will report what has been going on with the club and where we will elect the committee for 2021/2022. Please be sure to come along.
Shields were presented this week to the winners of the league competition that ended at the end of January.
For the Monday evening league, the winner was Alan Dodd with a score of 30 points and 182 shots. The runner up was Ron Taylor with a score of 28 points and 146 shots. For the Thursday morning league Brenda Haynes was the winner with 26 points and 167 shots. Denise Metcalf came second with the same number of points (26) but only 138 shots. Congratulations to all who take part and particularly to these two very deserving winners. To see the previous winners go to our Hall of Fame Congratulations to Keith Shaw and Paul Glenister for winning the Monday and Thursday leagues at the end of July 2017. Once their names have been added to the trophies they will be presented to them. To see previous winner please visit our Hall of Fame.
At the end of the 2016/2017 season in the South East Essex Short Mat Bowls League (SEESMBL) both teams came top of their respective divisions and so will be promoted next season.
The Blue team came top in Division 2 with 42 points, 1 point above the runners up OCBC A, and both will be going into Division 1 next season. The Gold team won Division 3 with 40 points, 3 points above their nearest rivals Bulphan, and both will be going into division 2 next season. There will be a presentation of prizes for all League winners and a quiz evening on 10th June 2017 at the Springhouse Club in Corringham. The winner of the Monday league finishing at the end of January was Paul Glenister and the runner up was Chris Taylor.
The Thursday league winner was Brenda Haynes and the runner up was Mary Freeman. It is nice to see that three out of the top four in the league were ladies, or as Paul would say, girlies. Trophies were presented in February by the treasurer. Good luck to everyone for the next season. A good time was had at the Christmas party on 19th December. We started the evening with a Girls v Boys competition. Due to a lack of girls, Brian was made an honorary girl for the night but he bore the teasing well. Needless to say the girls won, but there was some suggestion of skulduggery on one mat, so we will never know.
After that we sat down to a lovely tea provided by the members and some mulled wine thanks to Mary. Brian provided some music and table quizzes, and everyone joined in with silly cracker jokes. Around 20 members enjoyed a lovely Christmas meal at the Puddle Dock Cafe. This was the second year running that we have been there and we were so impressed again that we have provisionally booked it for next Christmas again.
For the week of 9th - 15th October 2016
Atte Bower Short Mat Bowls Club was proud to be taking part in The World's Biggest Coffee Morning in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support and a total of £323 was raised A big thank you to the members of the club who donated and bought some delicious cakes, as well as entering the competition to guess the number of smarties on a cake. Pater K won £25 which he generously donated back. Another big thank you goes to the Committee of Bower Hall who allowed the club to donate the rent we should have paid that week to the cause. Finally, all of the members weekly fees were included in the donation. For more information about Macmillan Nurses and what they do with your donations please go to their website. |
