Atte Bower Gold team played Ramsden Rooks at home on Sunday and, just like our match against Woodlands, we got three of the five points available. And again, like Woodlands, Ramsden Rooks got just one shot less than us overall, a very close match. We enjoy close competitions but need to get some of these points back in our return matches.
Woodlands Short Mat Bowls Club took 2 points from Atte Bower Gold team in a very close match last night. Atte Bower was expecting a challenging home match and were not disappointed. Woodlands won by 3 shots on one mat and lost by 4 shots on the other. We look forward to a return match in the new year, when we will try hard to snatch some points back.
On Wednesday 28th October the Gold team journeyed down to Westcliff-on-Sea to play against Heron Park. We knew it was going to be a challenging game, as we have played them at their venue before and come away bruised. This time however, we managed a win on one mat and came away with two points and a minus five shot difference. I am sure that when we play them at home in the New Year they will be seeking to get their own back. We'd like to thank them for their hospitality and really friendly attitude.
Atte Bower Gold Team got off to a mixed start to the season last week. We lost our way to our first match away at Hatfield Peverel on Wednesday and, when we got there eventually, we lost the match on both mats with an overall shot difference of 31. Despite that we enjoyed the company and look forward to meeting them at home next year.
It was a win on both mats for us at home though on Sunday against Bulpham, with an overall shot difference of 16. Once again we enjoyed the company and the banter and found Bulpham to be very good sports. We got of to a good start with a win over Wickford A at home with a shot difference of 71 to 10 this is the best result we have ever had, so the new mats appear to be a great buy. All played well & we had a great tea afterwards & look forward to the return match.
Fifteen members played in the triples on Saturday and, with teams picked at random, the competition was extremely close. Three teams all won two matches, lost one and drew one. Of these two had a shot difference of plus 8 (the other was less) and both won an equal number of ends. So two teams shared 1st place and each player received £7.50 prize money - not a fortune but it is the taking part that is important. It was a very pleasant competition with plenty of friendly banter and after we finished we went to the Orange Tree pub for a meal.
As the league will start soon the next fun competition will not be held until 2016, but if you want a good day out do look out for information about it around March time. This year's AGM was held on 7th September 2015. There was nothing controversial discussed but if you didn't make it (or if you did but still want to know) these are the headline decisions.

Officers elected for the coming year are:- Chairman - Peter Knight Vice Chairman - Rita Street Treasurer - Brian Metcalf Secretary - Denise Metcalf Social Secretary - Sylvia Knight Other committee members - Derek Batchelor, Mary Freeman, Alan Jupe and Sylvia Snelling. Friendlies selector - Sylvia Snelling Gold Team Selectors - Sylvia Snelling and Derek Batchelor Blue Team Selectors - Peter Knight Auditor - John Wiles Next year the AGM will be in July - date to be advised. We will be holding another of our famous Fun Quiz Nights on 26th September. Tickets will be £5 per person and tickets will be entered into a prize draw on the night. Teams will be up to eight people, but if you do not have a team we can introduce to other people to make a team up.
Bring your own refreshments and snacks, as well as your sense of humour, as we welcome a little banter (although the quiz master tells us she is always right) At our last quiz, Alan won the ticket prize draw of a bottle of gin and a team from the cycling club won the quiz, receiving wine and chocolates as prizes. There were some lovely raffle prizes too and overall we made £257.04 towards our new mats. Lets try to make it even more successful this time. See Denise or Sylvia for tickets. The Club's 21st birthday celebrations were cancelled when heavy rain forced us to call off the Garden Party. We still want to mark this anniversary in some way but need some ideas from members so if you have any suggestions do let us know by posting comments below.
An unusual, but very enjoyable friendly was played last week. Three teams each sent a team of four to play us so we had a match against Ramadan on Mat 1, a match against Castle point on Mat 2 and one against Haleigh on Mat 3. We can hold our heads high as we won on the first two mats and drew on the third, where we were told Haleigh had two county players on their team.
Thanks to our visitors for making it such a good evening's play. |
